FOLLOWING THEIR ADVICE

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 21-24

"Following their evil advice, Ahaziah made an alliance with King Joram, the son of King Ahab of Israel..." 2 Chronicles 22:5 NLT

Do you remember as a child using 'they are all doing it' as an argument when asking Mom and Dad for permission to do something?

If your parents were anything like mine, their response was, 'Well, who are 'they'?'

Seldom if ever could I provide them with a good list of names. 'They' usually ended up being one, single solitary friend. Maybe two friends, if it was a real enticing offer.

Ahaziah took the advice of 'them' and made an ungodly alliance that cost him his life--and left another scar in Judah's history.

Ahaziah held office because of God. He sat on a throne God had promised to Ahaziah's great-grandfather, David. He continued a line of kings God had covenanted to maintain.

But God is not whose advice Ahaziah sought.

He asked counsel of men who tickled his ear, bowed to his role as king and would eventually lead him to make ungodly alliances with countries that didn't serve God.

But not God.

Why do we do that?

Why do we ask around, or Google for answers, but won't ask advice of our Creator, Redeemer and King?

Might it be because we know what He will tell us...

Because we know what the right answer is...

Because we have heard Him tell us before, but we chose not to obey...
