SORRY ENOUGH
Today's reading: Jonah
"When the king of Ninevah heard what Jonah was saying, he stepped down from his throne and took off his royal robes. He dressed himself in sackcloth and sat on a heap of ashes." Jonah 3:6 NLT
The kids at our church spent all of last summer learning about Jonah. Every Wednesday night we would gather to find out a little more about his account with the big fish, with trying to run from God and with the emotions tied up in doing what God asks--no matter what.
My favorite lesson had to do with the king of Ninevah and his reaction to finding out what the Gospel had to say about how he had been living.
He was repentant. He was sorry. He was disgusted with himself.
So much so that he put on his most 'itchy-scratchy clothes' in order to keep his mind focused on doing what was right. An act that would remind him with every move and every breath of the changes he wanted to make in his life.
Imagine wearing clothes made out of burlap? Imagine how uncomfortable?
We don't like being uncomfortable, do we? In what we wear. In how we're treated. In doing what we're called to do. In facing our sins. In the conviction we feel as the pastor presents 'thus saith the Lord'.
Maybe it's time we made an effort to make God a bigger priority than our comfort. Maybe it's time we put on our 'itchy-scratchies' just to remind us of the direction we need our hearts to be going.
