YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE
Today's reading: Obadiah
"You shouldn't have..." Obadiah verses 12-14 NLT
Obadiah, the prophet, was foretelling the land of Edom of their impending destruction.
God was going to exact justice on this nation for their unfair treatment of the Israelites.
The punishment was harsh. The fall out would be monumental. The consequences matched the offense.
You see, the Edomites were 'brothers' to the Israelites.
A quick history lesson tells us that Abraham had Isaac, and Isaac had Jacob--the father of the Israelites. What we fail to remember is that Jacob had a twin brother, Esau. Esau was the father of the Edomites.
It's helpful to know this as we read, and re-read, verses 12-14 about what 'brothers shouldn't do to brothers'...
What believers shouldn't do to believers...
What church members shouldn't do to other church members...
Gloating over hard times. Rejoicing at the suffering of others. Crowing over others as they suffer disaster. Plundering another's possessions. Looting their homes. Making ourselves rich at the expense of others. Killing. Capturing.
It's hard enough to battle what the enemy does outside the walls of our churches and homes, we cannot allow him to gain a foothold inside our sanctuaries!
Remember the 'you shouldn'ts'.
