CARRYING YOUR IDOLS
Today's reading: Isaiah 45-50
"Gather together and come, you fugitives from surrounding nations. What fools they are who carry around their wooden idols and pray to gods that cannot save!" Isaiah 45:20 NLT
It's almost comical to think of carrying around my wooden idols and little gods.
Pockets full of trinkets. Large bags toting carved figurines. Baskets of baubles that bring me luck, insure my safety or keep me from harm. Little totems that calm me, relax me, whisper peace into my senses. Items I have purchased, borrowed, picked up along the way and some fashioned by my own hands.
(I guess because of the eras in which I was raised, I conjure up glimpses of mood rings and incense sticks, a keychain with a lucky rabbit's foot attached, primitively stitched voodoo dolls, or more currently--a vial of oil.)
I see myself falling down at the Lord's feet and all these 'things' spilling out of my pockets, hands, bags and baskets. I can mentally hear the clatter of my ornaments and graven images. I instantly feel a weight lift off my shoulders.
I see the Lord smiling as He looks lovingly into my eyes, grabs both my hands in His, and with one gentle swipe of His foot sweeps all those other things away without even glancing at them.
His eyes and smile say, Finally, dear child, you have come to the Source of help.
