 TO GO FORWARD WITH

Today's reading: Acts 27-28

"For the next two years, Paul lived in his own rented house. He welcomed all who visited him, proclaiming the Kingdom of God with all boldness and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ. And no one tried to stop him." Acts 28:30-31 NLT

As we wrap up this year, we find this verse.

Paul, although under house arrest, did not stop!

He didn't stop being Christlike.

He didn't stop telling the Good News.

He didn't stop placing his complete, absolute, undeniable and unending trust in the One he met on the Damascus Road.

So, friends, as this year ends and a new one lays like a fresh clean notebook before us--let's go forward with the boldness, love and zeal Paul had!

 COME

Today's reading: Revelation 18-22

"...Let the thirsty ones come--anyone who wants to. Let them come and drink the water of life without charge." Revelation 22:17 NLT

As I hear the rain hitting the windows of our little farmhouse this morning, I'm pulled deeply into this verse.

So many are thirsty.

They think they are living by rushing rivers of fresh water--and yet their lives are parched.

They think they are basing their lives upon oceans of accomplishments--and yet they lie down and wake up every single day dehydrated and wanting.

They are buying into the world's offer of 'free water'--and yet are bartering with the devil at the expense of their lives.

But with God, free water is living water. It provides satisfaction. It gives all that's needed. It fulfills.

Are you drinking from the Living Water?

 JEALOUS FOR US

Today's reading: Song of Solomon 7-8

"...For love is as strong as death, and its jealousy is as enduring as the grave..." Song of Solomon 8:6 NLT

When we hear about the emotion of jealousy, we rarely, if ever, associate it as a positive character trait.

We immediately go back to junior high when we were jealous of another's clothes, hair that wasn't frizzy or their name-brand tennis shoes.

Maybe our minds don't take us back historically at all. Quite possibly it's a matter of looking out the kitchen sink window to the neighbor's house. Maybe you're jealous of their greener lawn, their shiny sports car, their well-manicured shrubs and their always-behaved children.

Those feelings wear us down, drain us of all that's good and are not intended for the likes of those who are following after Jesus.

But today's verse talks about love not being jealous of another, but for another.

God is jealous for us. For our whole hearts. For all of our thoughts. For every ounce of strength we can muster. For our souls.

Not of, but for...makes a difference in how we view His jealous love!

 WHY WAIT?

Today's reading: Psalm 149-150

"Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song..." Psalm 149:1 NLT

Maybe you have a list of resolutions you're itching to begin for the New Year.

Changes to be made.

Habits to break--or start.

New disciplines to work into your daily schedule.

Maybe praise is one of those new things you're wanting to place into your daily routine.

Why wait?

Today's the best day to begin honoring God.

Right now is the right time to start following His commands.

This very moment is just right for starting to sing a new song!

 MUCH, MUCH MORE

Today's reading: Esther 6-10

"...the king again asked her, Tell me what you want, Queen Esther. What is your request? I will give it to you, even if it is half the kingdom." Esther 7:2 NLT

As I sit here thinking about Esther being given such a 'signed check' from King Xerxes, my mind spins.

All she could ask for.

All that suddenly became available to her.

All the conveniences she could now request.

I have to admit, for a short time-- I was jealous of her lot in life.

But then?

Then I remembered, I am in a similar, but grander situation than she ever was!

I can approach the King and ask for my heart's desire.

I can step into the throne room of the Most High God and He leans down to hear my requests.

I can request anything at all I can think of--and His hands are not tied by political borders, banking limits or physical abilities!

What do you want, God asks me...what is it you desire?

 REMEMBERING

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 32-34

"How blessed you are, O Israel! Who else is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your protecting shield, and your triumphant sword! Your enemies will bow low before you, and you will trample on their backs!" Deuteronomy 33:29 NLT

Maybe the holiday season was hard on you.

Alone.

First one without a loved one.

Your emotions were many, but peace and joy, were not clearly evident.

Maybe you have too many memories, hurts, empty places and brokenness to buy into the Hallmark saying that it's the 'most wonderful time of the year'.

Well, for you, it's over. We're now back to regular life. The trees are being stored in attics and closets. The wrapping paper has all be thrown in the trash. The dinners, parties, get-togethers and special services have ended.

No matter how the holidays made you feel, please remember the words of today's verse...

How blessed we are, believing friends.

To know we are saved by the Lord.

We are protected by Him.

We are triumphant because of Him.

We are able to stand over our enemies in victory--even those tricky emotions.

Maybe you don't believe it's been the most wonderful time of the year, but as a saved, born again child of God--it's the most wonderful life to live!

 MISSING ONE FIGURE

Today's reading: Luke 2

"Anna, a prophet, was also there in the Temple...She talked about Jesus to everyone who had been waiting for the promised King to come and deliver Jerusalem." Luke 2:36-38 NLT

I've always wondered why there isn't an Anna figure in our nativity scene sets?

Mary, Joseph and Jesus are represented.

The three kings, the shepherds and usually, a drummer boy, are included.

Most sets even have a camel, or two, some sheep and sometimes, a donkey.

But why not Anna?

I know she wasn't there 'the night', but she was at the Temple when Jesus was introduced to the world, a sacrifice made to 'pay for' his birth and his name legally stated for all to know.

And she talked about him, I believe, a whole lot!

To everyone coming into earshot. To all that she dined with. To any and all who passed by her spot at the Temple.

She talked about the Baby, the King, the Redeemer, the Messiah.

I believe she deserves a spot in the Christmas scene!

 GREATEST CHRISTMAS GIFT

Today's reading: Acts 25-26

"...that all must turn from their sins and turn to God--and prove they have changed by the good things they do." Acts 26:20 NLT

Want a Christmas that is set in the record books as the best?

Want to finally have a Christmas that's based on the real reason of the season?

Want to fulfil the prayers and wishes of believing grandmothers and mothers?

Turn from your sins and turn to God!

 ARE YOU READY?

Today's reading: Revelation 12-17

"Take note: I will come as unexpectedly as a thief! Blessed are those who are watching for me, who keep their robes ready so they will not need to walk naked and ashamed." Revelation 16:15 NLT

Everywhere you go, people ask...Are you ready for Christmas?

They are wondering if your purchases are made, your fruitcakes baked and your extra chairs pulled out of storage for additional company around the table.

But, believing friend...Are you ready for Christ's return?

Are you His?

Have you prayed the prayer of salvation?

Are you attempting to walk in His ways, carry out His commands, love others as He loved you?

It's an important question, even and especially at this time of the year.

 NONE

Today's reading: Song of Solomon 5-6

"...None can rival him." Song of Solomon 5:15 NLT

As our minds wrap around the Baby this time of year, we cannot forget that God--even the God Who Came Down, has no rival!

He is not weak and innocent, but strong and just.

He is not meek and lowly, but present and in all.

His powerful traits are not dulled by whether or not our prayers are answered, but He is unchanging.

He has no rival.

None.

 WINTRY WEATHER

Today's reading: Psalm 146-148

"He sends the snow like white wool; he scatters frost upon the ground like ashes. He hurls hail like stones. Who can stand against his freezing cold? Then, at his command, it all melts. He sends his winds and the ice thaws." Psalm 147:16-18 NLT

Our rural region of the country is buckling down, preparing for a winter storm to hit over the next few days.

Warnings are posted on the television and radio.

Grocery stores are quickly being alleviated of all bread and milk.

Winter coats are flying off the racks at the department stores.

Even here on the farm, we're getting feed buckets and water buckets ready for -20 below temperatures.

So, when I came across these verses this morning--I was star struck!

The God who sends the cold, the snowflakes, the frost and the plummeting mercury--also sends the thaw. He sends winds to melt off what He's allowed.

What a reminder of His greatness!

Whatever season I am in, is temporary.

Where ever I am, I have not been left alone.

How I feel, and I have to watch the fickleness of feelings, needs to depend on what I know to be true about my God-not just what I see, what I understand, what I like.

I'm praying this winter storm reminds me of that, because my faith needs a nudge!

 MOURNING CHRISTMAS

Today's reading: Esther 1-5

"When Mordecai learned what had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, crying with a loud and bitter wail." Esther 4:1 NLT

Mordecai mourned the political decision pushed into motion by Haman.

It would touch the lives of many. It would effect the people of God. It would harm and it would hinder for generations.

So he cried and wailed and displayed his sadness for all to see.

I thought as I read about Mordecai and his outward expression of deep-seated emotions, I thought of Christmas--and what's been done to it.

Should we as Christians mourn what it's become? Secular, sale-icious, seething with worldliness?

Should we cry out for other believers to return to the roots of this blessed holy season? The focus on the Messiah arriving, the Lamb born in the stable, the King lying lowly in a manger?

Should we be in tears over what we've rushed past, who we've rushed by, how we've rushed over what's the true meaning of Christmas? Jesus. Salvation. God with us.

As wonderful a season it is, it's lacking in its originally designed splendor...and that, Christian friends is something to mourn.

 WATCH YOUR IDOLS

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 29-31

"Surely you remember how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we traveled through the lands of enemy nations as we left. You have seen their detestable idols made of wood, stone, silver and gold." Deuteronomy 29:16-17 NLT

God warned the Israelites to watch their idols.

He asked them to remember how poor and pitiful the other nations looked bowing down to little handmade gods who could do absolutely nothing for them.

I think it's an important reminder for us, too. Today. Right now. In our lives of plenty, comfort and contentedness.

Because little gods never start out as anything but that--little.

Little gods, size wise, seldom disappoint--at first.

Handmade, self-manufactured, placed on pedestals of our own making idols will never give us a good return on the investment--of our hearts, our time, our efforts.

So, watch for the little gods.

Our lives have room for only one God--the one who created us!

 PROVE IT

Today's reading: 3 John

"...Remember that those who do good prove that they are God's children, and those who do evil prove that they do not know God." 3 John 11 NLT

As you walk into your church this morning...

Or as you step inside yet another store this crazy, hectic week...

Or as you gather around another family member's table for a holiday meal...

Or as you clock in...

Remember to prove that you are God's!

By your attitude.

By your words.

By your actions.

By your love.

 FOR YOURSELF

Today's reading: Acts 23-24

"You can find out the truth of our accusations by examining him yourself." Acts 24:8 NLT

We find, in this portion of Scripture, Paul being falsely charged by the governmental and religious leaders of his time.

The lead council for the opposing side, Tertullus, says the above statement in his opening remarks.

It opened the doors for Paul to speak, for Paul's actions to speak for themselves, for our lives--even these centuries later, to be impacted.

You see, no matter what is said about us...

No matter what we hear about others...

No matter what accusations, gossip or slander is spoken in regards to us...

Our lives should offer proof that we are His, living for Him, honoring Him and producing fruit for Him.

God is our defense attorney, in all cases. And He allows our lives lived for Him and the witness of the Holy Spirit to back up our credentials as children of the Most High God!

 WITH US

Today's reading: Revelation 7-11

"That is why they are standing in front of the throne of God, serving him day and night in his Temple. And he who sits on the throne will live among them and shelter them." Revelation 7:15 NLT

Even in the book of Revelation we are reminded that the Baby born in the stable, is Emmanuel--God with us.

Not just God for us.

Not just God forgiving us.

Not just God asking a holy life of us.

But God with us, here on earth.

As we go about our days.

As we traverse our mountaintops and valleys.

As we seek Him like the wise men did!

 LOOK FOR HIM

Today's reading: Song of Solomon 3-4

"One night as I lay in bed, I yearned deeply for my lover, but he did not come. So I said to myself, I will get up now and roam the city, searching for him in all its streets and squares. But my search was in vain." Song of Solomon 3:1-2 NLT

The account is of a young Shunemite woman who was looking for her prince, or in this instance, King Solomon.

It tells of the lengths she was willing to go to just to find him.

The effort she would take.

The steps she would walk just to be with him.

But her search was in vain. He was no where to be found by her.

Oh friends, this reminds me of how easy it is to find our True Love.

Just call His name and He is with us.

Just whisper a cry to Him and He is near.

Not always with the answer we want or the remedy we think we so desperately need at the moment, but He is with us.

Emmanuel, God is with us!

 TELL THEM THE STORIES

Today's reading: Psalm 143-145

"Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts." Psalm 145:4 NLT

Tell them the stories of Jesus.

Write on their hearts every word.

Tell them the stories most precious,

sweetest that ever was heard.

Did you grow up singing that song?

Did you grow up with flannelgraphs, Sunday School card classes, teachers who could bring the Bible to life in a little church basement on cold metal chairs?

Are you doing the same for your kids, or grandkids? The kids in your neighborhood?

Maybe you haven't. Maybe you haven't been given the opportunity. Maybe it's been too daunting a task.

Here's an easy way to start...

Tell them the real meaning of Christmas.

Tell them about the Baby born in a stable in Bethlehem.

Tell them about the simple fact that this Child was straight from God.

Tell them about the shepherds awed and amazed by a visit from the angels.

Tell them about the wise men and their precious gifts laid before a squiggling, squirming baby.

It's enough for the first try. It's enticing enough to cause them to ask more about Him at a later time.

Tell them the stories of Jesus!

 ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

Today's reading: Nehemiah 10-13

"...So we promise together not to neglect the Temple of our God." Nehemiah 10:39 NLT

Are you a church member?

Not just a name on the role. Not just a line to fill in on your obituary. Not just a personal attachment due to family history or your visits at Christmas and Easter.

Are you are participating member of God's church?

Do you support a local body with your presence during worship? Your tithes? Your time? Your prayers? Your interaction with other believers?

Okay, do you support your church by your words? Your complimentary mentions of your body of worshipers? Your out and out support of your ministers and programs?

As believers, we are called to worship with others. We are called to be active members of the Body.

Active believers don't sit at home.

Participating members don't just sit on the pew.

Is your church being blessed by your choice not to neglect?

 THEN

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 26-28

"Then all the nations of the world will see that you are a people claimed by the Lord, and they will stand in awe of you." Deuteronomy 28:10 NLT

In order to fully grasp the blessing God intends for His people, we must look back to the 'IF' of this promise of His,,,

"If you fully obey the Lord your God by keeping all the commands I am giving you today..." Deuteronomy 28:1 NLT

It's not church attendance that's going to get us applause from heaven.

It's not the size of the donation you give to the church that will heap blessings upon your life.

It's not that your church membership is mentioned in your obituary that will bring about God's welcome into His pearly gates.

What blesses our lives...

What causes His face to smile...

What fulfills the purpose we were created for...

What allows the world to take notice of our lives...

Is our obedience to God and His commands.

Nothing else.

 IN THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE

Today's reading: 2 John

"May grace, mercy and peace, which come from God our Father and from Jesus Christ his Son, be with us who live in truth and love." 2 John verse 3 NLT

Let's be sure, Christian friends, that as we maneuver the hustle and bustle of this high and holy season that grace, mercy and peace are clothing us!

While in the busy checkout lines...

While waiting on hold for a representative...

While being put in a 'time-out' by a slow driver ahead of us...

If this time of year should remind us of anything at all--it's that being Christlike is being inconvenienced, being put out for the sake of mankind and being asked to bow in servitude in an effort to remind us to be meek and lowly.

Jesus did all of that when He came to earth as a baby, didn't He?

 WATCH FOR THEM

Today's reading: Acts 21-22

"(For earlier that day they had seem him in the city with Trophimus, a Gentile from Ephesus, and they assumed Paul had taken him into the Temple." Acts 21:29 NLT

I have copied this verse as I found it in my Bible--parenthesis and all!

It seems, as noted, to be an addendum. A sidenote. A underthought needing noticed.

I take it as a warning. A challenge. A sin to watch for.

Assumptions.

There is no room for them in the church.

There is no room for them in God's family.

There is no room for them--period.

 HE IS

Today's reading: Revelation 1-6

"I am the Alpha and the Omega--the beginning and the end, says the Lord God. I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come, the Almighty One." Revelation 1:8 NLT

Sometimes, even though you know that you know--a reminder is necessary.

Consider this morning's verse such a reminder.

God always has been--Ancient of Days!

God is--Sustainer and Friend!

God will be--Eternal and Everlasting.

What we read of His goodness in the Bible tells us about who He has been, what we feel by way of the Holy Spirit bears witness to us as to who He is today and resting on the assurance that He holds every tomorrow in His hands gives us hope.

Was. Is. Will always be.

 HOW MUCH

Today's reading: Song of Solomon 1-2

"He brings me to the banquet hall, so everyone can see how much he loves me." Song of Solomon 2:4 NLT

I don't consider I have ever outgrown the gangly, awkward teens years, even at age 51. I seldom don't replay conversations in my head as to how I mis-spoke. I don't like walking into a crowded room, but choose to get there early so as to be in the audience as folks arrive.

So for a gal like myself, who struggles with low self-esteem, I love this verse.

God adores me and brings me before the world as one of His favorites.

He lavishes gifts/blessings on me like I have won first prize in everything in His book--not just a consolation prize for having shown up.

He chooses to know exactly who I am and still speaks to me through His Word.

Oh, how I love this verse and the boost it gives my spirit!

 CONSTANT PRAYER

Today's reading: Psalm 140-142

"...But I am in constant prayer against the wicked and their deeds." Psalm 141:5 NLT

There are wicked people and evil happenings out there, I'm not discounting that fact.

But let me ask you this...

Are you praying as much as you are giving comment to their poor choices?

Are you praying as much as you are posting lengthy discourses about them on social media?

Are you praying as much as you are spending time placing signs in your yard stating your opinion?

Are you praying as much as you are writing letters to their headquarters?

Are we, truly are we, in constant prayer against the wicked and their deeds?

Or is it something we do as a hobby, as a side gig, as a Sunday-only act?

 THE WORD OF THE LORD

Today's reading: Nehemiah 5-9

"Then Ezra praised the Lord, the great God, and all the people chanted, Amen! Amen! as they lifted their hands toward heaven. Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground." Nehemiah 8:6 NLT

Had Ezra just presented a soul stirring sermon? Had the choir just sang a highly emotional hymn? Had the glory of God settled on those gathered like a cloud?

No. No. No.

What had occurred prior to the people falling down in praise was this...

Ezra opened the Bible. The scroll of law, to be exact, as all the Bible as we know it was yet to be written, compiled, printed.

Just at the sight of God's Holy Word being opened before them!

At the very thought of a message from the Lord being delivered to them!

In anticipation of all that God had to say to them!

It shames me to think of how flippant I am to open the cover of my Bible for my morning reading. Or how very much for granted I take my pastor standing before our congregation with God's Word open on the pulpit and speaking its words over me. Or how arrogant I am to believe it's me reading the Word, not Him revealing it to me.

It's given me a different perspective on this valued, honored, timeless and powerful Book I have on my lap.

 REMEMBERING

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 23-25

"When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don't go back and get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans and widows...Do not glean the vines after they are picked, but leave any remaining grapes for the foreigners, orphans and widows. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I am giving you this command." Deuteronomy 24:19-22 NLT

Leaving some for the less fortunate.

Giving to others out of our abundance.

Providing needs to the needy.

Perfect reminders of just what it is we are supposed to do this holy season.

But I love that God instructed on the 'why' of what He has asked us.

Because, and it's important to remember, we were once the needy, helpless, hopeless and fatherless...until Jesus came!

 LOVING EACH OTHER

Today's reading: 1 John 4-5

"We love each other as a result of his loving us first." 1 John 4:19 NLT

Having trouble loving someone?

Someone that's hurt your feelings? Hurt a loved one? Hurt your pride? Is as annoying as all get out?

Here's a challenge...and it's one I'm giving myself...

Think of how much God overlooks in loving you.

Compare the sins God forgave in regards to your life to the inconveniences, petty offenses and annoyances you are needing to overlook in the life of another.

See if that helps.

He has loved us so very much--the least we can do is extend that love to others!

 END OF YEAR

Today's reading: Acts 19-20

"But my life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus--the work of telling others the Good News about God's wonderful kindness and love." Acts 20:24 NLT

As you near the end of the year, gathering up important papers and such for tax purposes, pause.

As you look over your bank records and profit/loss reports, stop.

As you consider where you are this year in regards to a year ago, hang out there for just a moment.

Your worth...

Your net worth...

Your value...

Your purpose...

Has nothing at all to do with your bank accounts, your portfolio or your accumulated wealth, and all to do with whether or not you shared the Gospel with another.

Did you share Jesus with someone this year?

Did you tell someone the Good News of Jesus' work on the cross?

Did you let someone know how loved they are by the Lord?

There, my dear friends, is where your life's worth lies.

 A SAFE PLACE
Today's reading: Malachi

"Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and loved to think about him." Malachi 3:16 NLT

I was introduced to this verse earlier this year and, to be quite honest, I've chewed on it, leaned on it, practiced it and marked it in just about every Bible I own.

When those who fear the Lord spoke with each other--shared their victories, their burdens, their prayer requests, their strongholds, their honest needs--the Lord listened!

Church folks, if we're not making our prayer meetings, our small groups, our altars, our Sunday School classrooms or our kitchen tables safe places for other Christians to share, then we're doing our church family a huge disservice!

In order to build one another up, we need to know where foundations are crumbling, where walls need restored or torn down, where leaky roofs of faith need patching.

And if we cannot do it in our body of believers, we need not expect to be able to do it in the world.

Gather with a group of believers. Share your highs and lows. Pray for, over, with Christian friends.

You need--and they need it, too.

 A DIFFERENT KIND OF THINKING

Today's reading: Ecclesiastes 11-12

"God's ways are as hard to discern as the pathways of the wind, and as mysterious as a tiny baby being formed in a mother's womb." Ecclesiastes 11:5 NLT

Believing friend, it all boils down to this: God thinks differently than we do!

And that's OK--wonderfully and perfectly OK!

He sees more than we ever will. He sees farther into the story than we possibly can. He sees deeper into hearts than we're allowed. He knows more than we will ever know. He loves more perfectly than we do. He has different motives, different desires, different facets of the definitions of grace and mercy than we will ever uncover.

Attempting to figure Him out will leave us worn out, embarrassed, dumbfounded and exasperated. But watching Him at work will leave us speechless and in awe.

Yes, God has a different way of thinking than we do--praise God!

 ALWAYS KNOWN

Today's reading: Psalm 137-139

"You chart the path ahead of me and tell me where to stop and rest. Every moment you  know where I am." Psalm 139:3 NLT

In a great big world...

Amidst the crush of millions of people...

Feeling very insignificant and small...

Not sure if you and your life are even noticed...

You are!

God knows exactly who you are and where you are and what He has for you to do.

He created you for here and now and the sphere of influence you have within your community, your tribe, your mission field.

Do not ever doubt that He doesn't know you!

 HONEST ANSWERS
Today's reading: Nehemiah 1-4

"Hanani, one of my brothers, came to visit me with some other men who had just arrived from Judah. I asked them about the Jews who had survived the captivity and about how things were going in Jerusalem. They said to me, Things are not going well..." Nehemiah 1:2-3 NLT

If you know anything about the book of Nehemiah, about Nehemiah himself or about the amazing task Nehemiah and the Jewish people undertook--then you know this is an amazing book!

How God speaks through Nehemiah. How God chooses to use Nehemiah. How God enables Nehemiah. How God speaks to us through the book of Nehemiah.

But how great all of this is is based solely on the fact that when asked, some people gave honest answers.

Had Hanani and his friends provided Nehemiah with the 'Sunday school answer' in regards to how things were going, the tide would never have turned.

They had to be open about the problems they were facing.

They had to admit they were unable to fix things on their own.

They had to open up about their disappointments and discouragements.

That, friend, took bravery.

It took trust.

It took being at a spot, a rather low spot, and knowing the prayers and help from another is all you have left.

It's an example for us!

As members of a body of believers, we've got to stop attempting to handle things on our own. We've got to stop buying into the lie that we're strong enough individually. We've got to get to the point in our Christian walks that we are leaning on God--and on the people of God He surrounds us with.

So, the next time someone asks how you are--be honest.

 NOT IF, BUT WHEN

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 20-22

"When you go out to fight your enemies..." Deuteronomy 20:1 NLT

"Before you go into battle,.." Deuteronomy 20:2 NLT

It's not a matter of IF you will fight, Christian...it's a matter of WHEN.

There will come a time you will battle on your knees. In prayer. Remembering and proclaiming each every promise of His you can recite.

There will come a time you battle your own will. If you should, If you shouldn't. If you can. It it will be beneficial to your walk with the Lord.

There will come a time you take a stand on a dividing line drawn in the sand. A stand on the side of the Lord. Against family members. Against dear friends. Against other believers. Against the not-yet saved.

You will be forced to fight for every belief you have at some point in your Christian walk.

 WE'VE NOT MADE IT YET

Today's reading: 1 John 1-3

"So don't be surprised, dear brothers and sisters, if the world hates you." 1 John 3:13 NLT

Believing family, don't feel bad if you don't 'fit in'...

Don't 'belong'...

Haven't found your 'place' in this world...

Because, well, because we've not made it home yet.

This world isn't home.

The age you live in isn't your eternity.

This body of believers is not who you will spend the remainder of your heavenly days worshiping with.

 FEEL THEIR WAY

Today's reading: Acts 17-18

"His purpose in all of this was that the nations should seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him--though he is not far from any one of us." Acts 17:27 NLT

Got a list of folks you are praying will 'feel their way toward' God?

Loved ones who are vising the far country?

Close friends who are good, kind, the best--but not saved?

Let's pray even harder for them to fall into His presence. To step into His influence. To draw close to our Father.

 CHRISTMAS CARD

Today's reading: Zechariah 8-14

"...Your king will bring peace to the nations. His realm will stretch from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth." Zechariah 9:10 NLT

Why haven't I ever seen this verse on a Christmas card?

Peace on Earth in wrapped up neatly in these words, flourished with a bow.

Our King will bring peace--ah, blessed and sought after peace.

Our King holds the entire world in His hands--safety, security, at the top of everyone's Christmas list.

A new verse for a new Christmas season!

 DEEP DIVE

Today's reading: Ecclesiastes 9-10

"Give thanks to the Lord for He is good..." Psalm 136:1 NLT

This morning I am deep-diving into thankfulness.

More than a shallow appreciation.

Greater than a passing gratitude.

Even as I sit here at my computer, I'm overwhelmed by God's goodness to me...

I have a mind that can compute the letters strewn together to make words in His Book.

I have nimble finger, that although may send an occasional typo, can fly across the keyboard and express thoughts about what He speaks to me.

I have electricity to power the computer, lights to light my way to my Prayer Chair, a furnace that keeps me toasty and warm as I snuggle up in God's Word.

I have a Bible in my hands, an ancient text that is near and dear to my heart, legal to have in the beautiful country I live in and a background of generation after generation who has leaned mightily on its words.

I have a houseful of love and I can see from my front door another houseful of blessings.

I'm swimming in an ocean of God's favor.

Oh, friends, I'm deep diving into this thanks-filled day, do the same!

 PSALM 136

Today's reading: Psalm 134-136

"Give thanks to the God of heaven. His faithful love endures forever." 136:26 NLT

The entire psalm reminds us to give thanks to the Lord.

To express to Him our gratitude.

To let Him know we so appreciate all He has done.

To tell the world we value His gracious hand upon us.

Not because He answers every prayer as we prescribe.

Not because He gives relief the moment we whisper 'amen'.

Not because our prayers tickle His ear.

But because His faithful love endures forever.

His love--for us.

Forever.

Give thanks!

 EMBARRASSSED TO SAY

Today's reading: Ezra 6-10

"When these things had been done, the Jewish leaders came to me and said, “Many of the people of Israel, and even some of the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the other peoples living in the land. They have taken up the detestable practices of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites. For the men of Israel have married women from these people and have taken them as wives for their sons. So the holy race has become polluted by these mixed marriages. Worse yet, the leaders and officials have led the way in this outrage." Ezra 9:1-2 NLT

Dear Church Folks,

Are we living in ways that honor and glorify God?

Are we striving to have lifestyles that point to God?

I'm not asking are we perfect--because that's not possible. But are we trying with all that's in us to live godly lives? Are we paying tribute by our every breath to the God who has saved us, set us apart and plans an eternity with us?

It's not up to the unsaved to draw folks to Him.

It's not up to the world to evangelize, minister to and share testimonies of God's greatness.

It's up to us.

And if we're not doing it, if we are the polluted, taking part in detestable practices, then I'm embarrassed to say--we're failing at the one thing we've been called to do.

 IN PROPORTION
Today's reading: Deuteronomy 16-19

"...Bring him a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings you have received from him." Deuteronomy 16:10 NLT

What would you bring the Lord in proportion to the blessings He has given you?

Would a fleet of semi trucks be able to haul it all to the altar?

Would a convoy of moving vans possibly transport all you would want to offer Him?

Would a flotilla of cargo ships hold all you 'owe' Him in reverence, awe and worship?

No, for me either.

The world doesn't hold enough to offer Him.

My bank account, although all provided by Him, seems insufficient to purchase the needed items for worshiping my Lord.

The oceans wouldn't be able to hold all I feel I should thank Him for.

So I give my prayers as a response.

I give Him my ear as a gift.

I offer Him my heart and mind as tokens of my appreciation.

And still, I owe Him so much more!

 GET TO KNOW HIM

Today's reading: 2 Peter

"As we know Jesus better, his divine power gives us everything we need for living a godly life. He has called us to receive his own glory and goodness!" 2 Peter 1:3 NLT

Get to know Jesus!

Spend more time in the Word.

More time on your knees.

More hours of your day listening for Him to speak.

The more we know of Him, the more around Him we are, the more like Him we wlll be!

 GREAT JOY

Today's reading: Acts 15-16

"And there was great joy throughout the church that day as they read this encouraging message." Acts 15:31 NLT

Imagine a church setting where what the 'preacher' presented was accepted with great joy and seen as encouragement?

That all listening were moved in positive ways.

That everyone sitting on the pews accepted and rejoiced at what they heard.

Sounds near to impossible, doesn't it?

Because people get their feelings hurt by the minister's words.

Folks are put off by his tone.

Long-time church attenders don't think he should be talking about such things, or have a checklist of things he hasn't yet preached about.

And some people, well, some people just don't like the message he brings. Because it gets a little too close to their sins. Asks too much of their hearts and minds. Spotlights a shortcoming of theirs.

But when the message is given by the Holy Spirit, presented through a man led by the Holy Spirit, based upon the Word of God and attended to by folks led by the Lord--joy and encouragement come from its hearing.

Today's verse will make me listen with Holy Spirit anointed ears tomorrow as I sit on the pew.

 FINGERS IN THEIR EARS

Today's reading: Zechariah 1-7

"Your ancestors would not listen to this message. They turned stubbornly away and put their fingers in their ears to keep from hearing." Zechariah 7:11 NLT

If, like me, you know folks who are standing in the absolute presence of God and refusing to notice Him, disregarding the circumstances He has allowed or as the Scripture says, are literally putting their fingers in their ears as not to hear Him--then these words are for you!

They cannot stop Him.

They cannot ignore Him for very long.

They will not, easily or comfortably, maintain that stance for very long.

One cannot ignore God.

 THE VALUE OF SORROW

Today's reading: Ecclesiastes 7-8

"It is better to spend your time at funerals than at festivals. For you are going to die, and you should think about it while there is time. Sorrow is better than laughter, for sadness has a refining influence on us." Ecclesiastes 7:2-3 NLT

Happiness seldom allows us insight to realign our priorities.

Ease doesn't usually give us reason to pause and reconsider.

Laughter is not usually something that cleanses our soul.

Sorrow, grief and tears, however, tend to make impacts on us that we would never sign up for--but need in order to live lives refined in His image.

In sorrow we feel God nearer to us.

In sad times we lean more solidly on Him.

Through tears we have to intentionally fix our gaze on Him for focus and clarity.

So we should, in its proper order of emotions, appreciate sad times for what they can do for us.

JUST WHO DO I THINK I AM?

Today's reading: Psalm 131-133

"Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don't concern myself with matters too great or awesome for me." Psalm 131:1 NLT

As surely as I didn't think this verse was for me--sadly, it is!

I didn't consider myself proud or haughty, until God in His loving way exposed a few things to me that called for me to reconsider who this was written for...

Why, God, I ask--like me, in my lowly, humble role as a human should expect an answer from God!

When, God, I plead--like I think He owes me any explanation whatsoever of what He's doing and the time clock He is doing it on!

How can this happen, God, I cry out--like my miniscule mind could comprehend any explanations the Creator of all could ever provide me!

What in the world are you doing, God, I question--like where I am on this tiny green and blue orb allows me any scope or position to understand all He organizes, coordinates, orchestrates and juggles at any one millisecond!

So, in His quiet speaking to my heart, I find this verse is for me. For the times I forget just who I am and just who He is.

 THINGS UNCHANGED

Today's reading: Ezra 1-5

"Then God stirred the hearts of the priests and Levites and the leaders of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple of the Lord." Ezra 1:5 NLT

The elections are over and sadly nothing seems to have changed.

Promises were spouted.

Changes were promised.

Revitalization was whispered in our ears.

But things remain unchanged.

Could it be because we were trusting in men to do the changing?

In Ezra this morning I see where God stirred the hearts of His people--and things started changing.

He spoke to the preachers and the deacons and the church folks in a way that got them up and going, moving and shaking, repenting and wanting to evangelize by way of rebuilding the Temple.

Oh, that He would do that today!

Church people, I'm asking God to stir us up. To move our hearts. To crawl inside our cozy and comfortable selves and do a re-model that we cannot remain quiet about.

I want God to start making a change!

 FEARING THE LORD

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 13-15

"...The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to fear the Lord your God." Deuteronomy 14:23 NLT

The practice of tithing I have been well aware of since early childhood.

It was discussed in our home, it was practiced in our home and it was considered quite important in our home.

Praise be to God, we have continued that Christian discipline in our own home-through even the leanest of weeks.

But even in knowing what I do about tithing, I was surprised to see this morning the real reason for it.

The purpose is not to fill the church offering plates.

It's not to bankroll for future building needs.

It's not to keep me from attaining too healthy a balance in my checkbook.

It's to keep me fearing the Lord.

Fearing as in being in awe. Fearing as in revering to the uttermost. Fearing as to knowing my lowly status in comparison to His.

I'm to fear Him more than I fear not getting other bills paid.

More than having a comfortable cushion in the account.

More than being free to purchase what I want when I want in the quantities I want.

Tithing, giving God His first, teaches priorities.

It's an act of worship.

NOT BEING INVITED

Today's reading: 1 Peter 4-5

"Be happy if you are insulted for being a Christian, for then the glorious Spirit of God will come upon you." 1 Peter 4:14 NLT

Not invited to the party because of your beliefs? Kudos, to you!

Not asked to the after hours assembly because of your morals? Hooray for you!

Not included in the off-color jokes with the other co-workers? Yeah, for you!

If you are standing out, that's great!

If you are noticeably different, that's wonderful!

If you aren't swimming downstream with the majority, that's even better!

If you are insulted for being Christ-like, then you are doing what's being asked of you!

Keep up the good work.

SENT OUT BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

Today's reading: Acts 13-14

"Sent out by the Holy Spirit, Saul and Barnabas went down to the seaport of Seleucia and then sailed for the island of Cyprus." Acts 13:4 NLT

If you've ever, like me, wondered how in God's great big world the 'Bible heroes' did what they did, I believe the answer is in this verse.

Sent out by the Holy Spirit...

These folks did what they did, with the courage they did it with, during the trials they had to endure, in the power and might of the Lord--because they were sent out by the Holy Spirit!

They weren't motivated by fear.

They weren't moved by the masses.

They weren't made to.

They weren't set out to seek vengeance.

They didn't voice their own opinions.

They didn't ONLY go to the ones they preferred, liked or related to.

They were sent out by the Holy Spirit. To do His work. In His way. At the time He ordained. To the people readied.

Are we seeking that kind of commission?

 CONSIDER

Today's reading: Haggai

"This is what the Lord Almighty says: Consider how things are going for you!" Haggai 1:5 NLT

After an early morning search through the pages of my Bible for the elusive book of Haggai, I found this morsel.

Something for me to chew on.

Something for me to think about.

Something for me to share.

Something for me to carry with me throughout the day.

How are things going for me? For you?

If things are going well, am I (you) praising and thanking God accordingly?

If things aren't going well, am I (you) in step with the Lord? Are things settled between He and I? Are there sins I'm committing and choosing not to repent of?

So, lots to think about this morning.

How are things going for you?

 HOARDING

Today's reading: Ecclesiastes 5-6

"...Riches are sometimes hoarded to the harm of the saver." Ecclesiastes 5:13 NLT

May I ask, what blessings might you be keeping to yourself?

Allowing to remain 'under wraps'?

Hoarding to your harm--and to the harm of those around you?

Might it be your testimony? How you came to know the Lord. The depths, lengths and heights He went to to find you?

Could it be you are keeping to yourself a skill or talent? One that might bless the church you attend or the group of folks you worship with? Something you thoroughly enjoy doing--but others seldom want to sign up for?

Maybe your 'riches' are your ability to talk to anyone. I mean ANYONE. Are you using that skill, that gift, that talent for God's kingdom? Are you using it for God's favor? Are you sharing Him at all times with everyone?

Our blessings are not intended to be hidden away, never seeing the light of day. They were given to us as a gift--one that is best shared.

Share your riches today!

 WHAT AM I COUNTING ON?

Today's reading: Psalm 128-130

"I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word." Psalm 130:5 NLT

Nothing like being placed smack-dab in the middle of a spiritual inventory at 5:30 am.

That's exactly what this verse did to me.

It gave me pause.

It caused me to think.

It made me search my soul for the truth behind the question, What am I counting on?

And honestly, it's not always the Lord.

I lean heavily on many other things: my abilities, seemingly good people, money, etc.

Why?

That's just what I asked myself!

Why, when each and every one of those things have left me still wanting, still needing, lacking in some way.

So this morning as the sun decides to rise and the morning breaks to dawn and this gift of a day begins, I want to place my hope in the Lord.

All of it.

For everything.

At all times.

 REFORM

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 33-36

"...The Lord's anger has been poured out against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the word of the Lord. We have not been doing what this scroll says we must do." 2 Chronicles 34:21 NLT

The mailbox is full of political ads.

My cell phone has received numerous calls from politicians wanting my vote.

There are signs in yard. Signs in front of businesses. Signs along the sides of the road.

It's Election Day.

Folks are hoping for reform.

Sorry to say, but they aren't going to find it in anyone listed on their ballots.

Our only hope of turning our country, our states, our cities and our little communities around is to begin to follow God's Law.

To do what the Bible tells us to do.

To love like Jesus does.

But it's not going to change overnight.

It's not going to realign itself in a matter of days.

It won't sweep the country in a revival type change.

It will only start one person at a time.

One Christian living Christlike.

One believer believing.

One who is born again so desiring to see another born again that they follow God's letter to a T.

One decision for obedience at a time.

Not one vote. Not one swipe of a pen in a voting booth. Not one visit to election headquarters.

It's going to change when we start doing what the Bible says we need to do.

I vote for that!

 STRENGTH

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 10-12

"Therefore, be careful to obey every command I am giving you today, so you may have strength to go in and occupy the land you are about to enter." Deuteronomy 11:8 NLT

I'd never seen it before. Never noticed it. Never once thought about the reasons behind it--until this morning.

When God provides commandments, rules, charges and requests--it's not to make more of Him, it's to make more of us!

Obedience to what He asks builds us up.

Strengthens us.

Make us wiser.

Makes us more able to stand against our enemy.

Makes us more believable in the eyes of those we are called to witness to.

He doesn't need us to make Him more God. He doesn't need us to make Him look better. He doesn't need us to make His power more well know, sought after or more appealing.

He asks us to obey so that we will be made stronger.

He's asking for our benefit.

 BUT YOU

Today's reading: 1 Peter 1-3

"But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are a kingdom of priests, God's holy nation, his very own possession. This is so you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light." 1 Peter 2:9 NLT

Look around you.

Notice all the personality quirks, unlovely dispositions and erratic behaviors that annoy the life out of you.

Bad behavior. Unkindness. Disloyalty. Bitterness. Anger.

Now re-read the verse.

Go ahead, re-read it.

There should be a stark contrast between you and 'them'.

There should be light and day difference between you and an unbeliever.

There should be telltale signs that you are truly a chosen people, a priest, a holy nation, God's very own possession!

If there isn't, well...

 RELIEF

Today's reading: Acts 11-12

"So the believers in Antioch decided to send relief to the brothers and sisters in Judea, everyone giving as much as they could." Acts 11:29 NLT

In this account the church folk collected needed food stuff for an area being hit with a great famine. They fulfilled the most basic of needs, using the hands of God to accomplish the task.

What are we doing to give relief to others?

To those facing mentally challenging times, are we giving kind words?

To those experiencing physical ailments, are we giving a helping hand?

To those drowning in doubts and fears, are we giving them the Lifesaver we know and are saved by?

To those who are quietly aching, are we simply giving the benefit of the doubt--being kind no matter their response, loving no matter their actions, pausing no matter the packed schedule we have?

God has given us much, plenty really, are we using what we have to the relief of others?

 PURIFIED LIPS

Today's reading: Zephaniah

"On that day I will purify the lips of all people, so that everyone will be able to worship the Lord together." Zephaniah 3:9 NLT

Nothing lights a fire under me quicker than foul language.

Four letter words get my goat!

The misuse of one's ability to speak and choosing to use curse words gets me riled like nothing else.

That being said, reading this verse gives me assurance that the Lord will do a work.

Why, you ask? Because if this gal can control her language, then anyone else can, too!

Oh, it's not curse words that slip so easily out of my mouth, but sarcasm, snide, rude and critical words. Words that cut. Words that wound. Words that waste precious breath and a moment's time of another's hearing them.

But one day...

One day, our lips will all be singing His praise in unison.

One day, our words will be harmonious in lifting up His glorious name.

One day, our tongues will reveal the joy He has poured into our lives.

Until then, well until then, I'll wage my war against bad words in a godly, loving manner.

 HIS TIME

Today's reading: Ecclesiastes 3-4

"God has made everything beautiful for its own time..." Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT

The autumn leaves are beautiful and crisp.

But my once vibrant garden, is dead and shriveled.

The creeks are running full again.

But the field lay picked and bare.

The seasons come and go, and with them varying degrees of beauty. What once was, isn't. What is, wasn't that long ago.

The same is true for our lives--and God's choice of timing in them.

This chapter may hurt, ache, leave you grieving, but the next? The next chapter may have you celebrating, bubbling with joy and singing songs of thanks aloud.

Everything, our lives included, are beautiful in His time.

For His purpose.

For His glory.

 WHAT AMAZING THINGS

Today's reading: Psalm 125-127

"We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. And the other nations said, What amazing things the Lord has done for them." Psalm 126:2 NLT

Imagine the scene...

Pagan nations. Neighboring countries. Across the border enemies.

And they notice what all God has done?

They speak up about the greatness of the Lord?

They sing His praises?

It makes me wonder IF the ungodly around me are noticing more of God's handiwork in my life than I am.

Could it be possible that they are singing His praises more loudly than I?

 SOMETHING TO DO

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 29-32

"Now when the festival ended, the Israelites who attended went to all the towns of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim and Manasseh, and they smashed the sacred pillars, cut down the Asherah poles, and removed the pagan shrines and altars. After this, the Israelites returned to their own towns and homes." 2 Chronicles 31:1 NLT

I'm interested to read that after their 'church service', God's people didn't rush off to the local eating establishment, off to get their errand list done or home to mow the grass--they did what God was asking them to do.

The worship they participated in moved them to do something for the Lord.

Do our services do the same?

Are we stirred to reach out to the lost?

Are we moved to give abundantly?

Are we pushed to encourage or help another?

Are we convicted to start something, or stop something?

Are we brought to our knees in repentance?

Just how are our worship services influencing our lives, and the lives of those around us, once we leave them?

 NO MERCY

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 7-9

"You must destroy all the nations the Lord your God hands over to you. Show them no mercy and do not worship their gods. If you do, they will trap you." Deuteronomy 7:16 NLT

One can watch the timeline of the world and see different eras when the enemy has snuck in and taken root.

Times when good and not-so-good were awfully close.

Moments in history when compromise allowed a door to be left cracked open.

Decisions made that showed mercy to wrong--and it has now trapped us.

But, sadly, one doesn't have to look as far as our nation 's history. One can look in the mirror.

To see someone who has fudged.

To see the image of one who has crossed the lines.

To see the reflection of a God follower who now allows more of the world in their home than Jesus.

To see a Christian who has shown mercy to foreign gods.

With all that God has done for us, and we disregard His warning in a verse like this?

And wonder why we're lacking, anemic really, in our faith?

Let us pray to break free of the traps our adultery has caused us to be caught in.

Let us beg God for iron in our backbones, conviction in our hearts and vision to see where it is we are passing out mercy to the undeserved.

 DRAWING CLOSE

Today's reading: James 4-5

"Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, you hypocrites." James 4:8 NLT

Want to know why most of us don't draw close to God? Why we don't lean into Him? Why we don't follow Him as closely as we should/could?

It's because we're afraid of what He might ask of us.

Where He might ask us to go.

How He might ask us to change.

Who He might ask us to forgive.

When He might ask us to trust Him and wait.

Drawing close means changing from being independent to completely dependent upon our Savior.

It takes courage. Faith. Hope. Love. Self-denial.

 AMAZED

Today's reading: Acts 9-10

"All who heard him were amazed, Isn't this the same man who persecuted Jesus' followers..." Acts 9:21 NLT

Here's the challenge I'm placing before myself--and in doing so, placing before you: the Saul/Paul Challenge.

I want those who know us, who know us well, who know us slightly, who know us vaguely, who know us by acquaintance only, to say this about us the next time they see us...

Isn't that the gal who...

Isn't that the believer who...

Isn't that the church member who...

Isn't that the mom who...

Isn't that the Christian who...

I want them to be amazed by who you are now.

...the gal who used to doubt and fear.

...the believer who used to strive for control.

...the mom who had lost her joy but now beams.

...the Christian who didn't have any disciplines under their belt but is now diving into the Word daily, spending time on her knees daily, listening for God's voice daily.

I want them to see how God has changed us--no matter how long we've been who we are, no matter how good a believer we already are, no matter our former predilections.

I want others to see that we've been with God through our week--and that's it touched our lives!

Are you in for the challenge?

...

 WHAT HAVE YOU GAINED

Today's reading: Habakkuk

"What have you gained by worshiping all your man-made idols? How foolish to trust in something made by your own hands! What fools you are to believe such lies!" Habakkuk 2:18 NLT

If we depend upon our wealth, how hard we work, our well we invest, how much we have, we're letting ourselves down.

If we trust in our health, how much we exercise, how rewarding it is to step on the scale, how few complex carbohydrates we consume, we're setting ourselves up to one day be slim and trim--but heavily disenchanted.

If we trust in our church membership, our parents' godliness or our names being listed on religious committee after religious committee, we're eventually going to find out we've abandoned our first love for the love of our self.

So what do we gain by honoring, giving excess time and effort, devoting ourselves to 'man-made idols'? Nothing, absolutely nothing other than a life wasted.

A life spent leaning into God for hope, for faith, for trust, for love--now that's a life worth living!

 HANDS FREE

Today's reading: Ecclesiastes 1-2

"...While still seeking wisdom, I clutched at foolishness..." Ecclesiastes 2:3 NLT

I'll share what I am prone to do, not as an example for you to follow--but as a warning against what you should look out for in your own life.

I'm in my Bible a lot. I'm reading it. Studying it. Referencing it in notes I send folks. I mark my Bibles with notes and highlighted passages. I re-write verses, to get it from the vision to the fingers.

I admit, I keep a Bible in my desk at work. A Bible on my coffee table--open. A Bible beside me at my prayer chair. I Bible propped up beside me as I write these devotions. I usually even have a Bible in my purse, if I know I'm going to have some down time--like in a waiting room.

I'd like to think I'm seeking wisdom from the pages of God's Word.

Until Solomon brought that thought to a screeching halt.

Like tires braking on asphalt.

Like insert an audio clip here.

Because, as Solomon puts it in this verse, I was seeking wisdom, while still clutching at foolishness.

I wanted to know what God's Word said, but still continue to manipulate many of the situations I found myself in.

I wanted to be well versed in my Bible, but still work my fingers to the bone attempting to work my plan out.

I wanted to be noted as having logged my time in the Good Book, but still leave enough time for me to see done what I wanted to see done.

I was seeking wisdom, but clutching at foolishness.

And it wasn't working out well. Not well at all!

I want to begin again. I want to start over. I want to remodel my time in the Word. I want it to be hands free.

I want my nose in the Bible, my heart in its passages and I want my hands to be open to all He might give--not busying myself about things that are too grand for me to understand, let alone handle.

Hands free. Yes, hands free.

 IF IT HAD NOT BEEN

Today's reading: Psalm 122-124

"If the Lord had not been on our side--let Israel now say--if the Lord had not been on our side when people rose up against us, they would have swallowed us alive because of their burning anger against us." Psalm 124:1-3 NLT

If we pause for a a short moment and consider how we might personalize these verse...

If it had not been for the Lord on our side when ...

'They' would have ...

Oh, the things He saves us from!

Gossipy words stamped out.

Accidents avoided.

Our names 'randomly' selected, or not selected.

Right place, right time, right circumstances.

A specific sermon on a empty-soul kind of day.

No matter what's swirling about us, how dark the clouds may seem or however long the night be lasting--we can stand with David and thank God that despite all these things, God is on our side--and Him being there thwarts our enemy's attempt at pinning us down!

 MUCH MORE

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 25-28

"...The man of God replied, The Lord is about to give you much more than this!" 2 Chronicles 25:9 NLT

Amaziah was faced with a choice--obey God, or be out a whole lot of money.

It would be so very easy for us to say, OBEY GOD--ALWAYS!

But do we do what we preach?

When we're in the middle of a commitment--and God asks us to step aside?

When we're up to our ears in a program or ministry--and God leads us to take a sabbatical?

When we've booked that vacation--and God doesn't give us peace about going?

When we've made a complete fool of ourselves in front of folks--and God asks us to share our testimony?

When we're in a crowd of needs--and God asks us to pray--out loud--with those gathered?

It's those opportunities, when God offers us so much more than what we're currently holding that we need to lean in to obedience.

Every time.

Where ever we are.

So that God's blessings can shower us!

 WHAT OTHER NATION?

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 4-6

"If you obey them carefully, you will display your wisdom and intelligence to the surrounding nations. When they hear about these laws, they will exclaim, What other nation is an wise and prudent as this! For what great nation has a god as near to them as the Lord our God is near to us whenever we call him?" Deuteronomy 4:6-7 NLT

Oh America,

Turn back to God.

Revisit the precepts you were founded upon. The laws you evoked for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness--in the Lord.

Let God lead once again!

Then the surrounding nations will stop their laughing at us.

The peace and security of our great land will be felt from sea to shining sea.

The prosperity of a nation under God will once again fill our wallets, our businesses and our reputation.

Just by turning back to God's laws. Individually, Corporately. In our homes and in our government.

Call out to the God who is near to those who whisper His name.

 WHY?

Today's reading: James 1-3

"But if you keep looking steadily into God's perfect law--the law that sets you free--and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it." James 1:25 NLT

Why keep your nose in the Bible?

Why do pastors, scholars, Sunday School teachers and blog writers ask you to get into the daily routine of Bible reading/study?

Because it's a good habit. And, yes, there are good habits!

Because it will change you. Sometimes without even you noticing it or making the effort to be the one doing the changing.

Because God will bless you for it. In some way. At some time.

So why not read your Bible daily?

Why not look steadily into God's perfect Law?

 GAZING STEADILY

Today's reading: Acts 7-8

"But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily upward into heaven and saw the glory of God,.." Acts 7:56 NLT

Stephen was in a tough place, but he kept His eyes on the prize.

No one around him supported him.

Nothing going on in his life, at that particular moment, was going well.

There seemed no positive end in his line of vision.

Until he looked up.

Until he locked eyes with the One he was serving.

Until he decided it would all be for God's glory.

I'm asked this morning by reading this portion of Scripture, Where am I looking?

 MY REFUGE

Today's reading: Nahum

"The Lord is good. When trouble comes, he is a strong refuge. And he knows everyone who trusts in him." Nahum 1:7 NLT

This verse doesn't just say that the Lord is a refuge, but a strong refuge.

I believe that's so important, because there are a whole lot of flimsy refuges we can use.

Ourselves. Our families. Our health. Our wealth. Our reputation. Our abilities. Our knowledge.

Flimsy, right? Right!

But what an assurance to know we have a strong refuge--a very strong refuge!

A Refuge that has stood the test of time--has created time itself.

 HOPE

Today's reading: Proverbs 31

"There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!" Proverbs 31:28 NLT

I'll be quite honest, I'm not feeling the Proverbs 31 vibe today.

Dishes are stacked to be washed. Laundry lays in piles on the floor. Dust is 'antiquity thick'. What's planned for supper is up in the air. I'm having a hard time liking the ones I love.

So to read about a gal who had her entire act together is deflating. Defeating. Discouraging.

Unless I choose to read about her with hope-filled eyes.

One day, I can imagine I might be her.

Some time, I may be able to do all I'm called to do--gracefully and lovingly.

Later, my act might be together.

Today is not that day, but I have hope!

Wednesday, October 19, 2022

 WHERE ARE YOU LOOKING?

Today's reading: Psalm 120-121

"I look up to the mountains--does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth!" Psalm 121:1-2 NLT

Re-focus, I hear God tell me.

Look at me, He whispers.

Rub your eyes and take a fresh look in My direction, He says.

Quit looking around.

Stop looking at the things I have created or circumstances I have allowed.

Make a new practice of looking to Me--first.

Every time.

In all things.

With your whole heart.

Even, and especially, past what looms in front of you.

Because your help comes from no where else but Me.

 LANDOWNERS

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 21-24

"Their father had given each of them valuable gifts of silver, gold and costly items, and also the ownership of some of Judah's fortified cities..." 2 Chronicles 21:3 NLT

In this passage we find that King Jehoram had gifted his sons with lucrative possessions. Gold, silver, costly items--and land!

Places to claim as their own. Acreage to plant their feet on and say, It's mine.

Our Father has done the same thing for us.

He has blessed us over and above anything we deserve. Monetarily. Emotionally. Physically.

But the land?

Maybe some of you hold deeds to the land on which you live, or a weekend vacation spot or a piece of property passed down from generation to generation, but I believe it's more than that.

I believe God gives us each a mission field.

Property on which to testify of His greatness.

A place, or places, in which we can spread the Good News about Him.

Spots on which we can take stands that allow others to see God through us, in us and working around us.

We are all landowners because of the loving kindness of our Father.

 SECOND OPINIONS

Today's reading: Deuteronomy 1-3

"Look! He has placed it in front of you. Go and occupy it as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Don't be afraid. Don't be discouraged. But you responded, First let's send out scouts to explore the land for us. They will advise us on the best route to take and decide which towns we should capture." Deuteronomy 1:21-22 NLT

God has said it.

God has presented it.

God has ordained it.

God has allowed it.

God has gotten them this far.

God has gifted them with this land.

And they want a second opinion?

A report from their own scouts?

They were wanting to make sure the Lord was right. That God had a handle on the situation. That the Creator knew just what was ahead.

Laughable? It might be if it weren't so personal.

Is Facebook your second opinion?

Do social norms approve or deny what God is leading you to do?

Are friends your voting constituency?

None of us are laughing now.

 WITNESSES

Today's reading: Hebrews 11-13

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us." Hebrews 12:1 NLT

Ever thought about the witnesses to your race of faith?

The ones who have vested interest in your Christian walk--the former pastors, Sunday School teachers, godly parents and mentors?

The ones laced up running beside you--church friends, prayer partners, godly co-workers who see you day in and day out?

The ones you're trying to reach for the Lord--the unsaved neighbor, the prodigal child, the almost-but-not-quite believers?

There are witnesses to our faith walks just like we are witnesses to the walks of others.

Let's not remember whose eyes are upon us. Let us not forget how important it is to keep on keeping on. Someone did it for us, let's do it for someone else!

 HERE'S THE TRUTH

Today's reading: Acts 5-6

"...You weren't lying to us but to God." Acts 5:4 NLT

In this portion of God's Word Peter is speaking with Ananias and Sapphira about some property they sold and were going to give the proceeds to the church.

The couple lied about the amount they received upon sale.

Peter, led by the Holy Spirit, knew they were lying--and could have been hurt by their act, but chose to confront the lie with truth.

You see, they weren't just lying to Peter.

They weren't just lying to the church family.

They weren't just lying to the ones in charge of collections.

They were lying to God.

Peter made it personal, because it was.

What about us?

Well, we sin against God.

We place idols before God.

We put laziness ahead of God when we choose not to get up and worship on sleepy Sunday mornings.

We put our knowledge against God's wisdom when we go our way instead of where He has asked us to go.

Sin is always against God. Sure there are others who are hit by the 'shrapnel of sin', but ultimately every sin we commit is against our Creator. Our Redeemer. Our Savior.

 WILL

Today's reading: Micah

"For the Lord WILL settle international disputes. All the nations WILL beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. All wars WILL stop and military training WILL come to an end." Micah 4:3 NLT

What WILL eventually happen is that the Lord WILL come and introduce Himself to all people as sovereign, mighty, magnificent and Lord of all.

There WILL be no one who can deny it.

There WILL be no questioning it, doubting it, explaining around it.

He WILL be seen as King of Kings.

He WILL be needed, by the sobbing masses, as Savior.

He WILL be revealed to all who have shut their eyes and ears to His greatness.

WILL you be one of the already readied? Or wait until last minute?

 EVERY WORD

Today's reading: Proverbs 29-30

"Every word of the Lord proves true. He defends all who come to him for protection." Proverbs 30:5 NLT

If you are wanting something to stand on--choose God's Word.

If you are looking for a guarantee--look no farther than the promises of God.

If you want an anchor that holds fast and true in the wildest storm--trust the words in red.

If you are seeking hope, desiring mercy, wanting to be upended by grace--open your Bible.

God, through His Word, speaks to every emotional disturbance, every life issue, every tough time, every doubt and every question any one of us will ever walk through.

 MUSIC OF MY LIFE

Today's reading: Psalm 119

"Your principles have been the music of my life throughout the years of my pilgrimage." Psalm 119:54 NLT

Oh, the places this verse takes my soul and myever-imaginative mind!

I can, even at this early morning hour, call to mind times when God's Word has been the music of my life...

-During long, dark nights when His printed Word was a lullaby to my fears.

-At moments when the truths of a verse spoke louder than the lies being whispered by my enemy.

-On days when I needed the Scripture like a flailing ball team needed the cheers from the stands.

-When water was pouring into my boat of faith by the bucketfuls yet God's Word repeated itself over and over to me in the tune of 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat'.

-When I was alone, even in a crowded room, it sang softly to my spirit.

-In seasons when the pages of my Bible caught tears like a tissue as I looked for answers, looked for hope, looked for the next breath to take.

-On Sundays when His word worked into the chorus of a new song spoke to my needs in the pew.

-At the times when I had to hum the words of Holy Scripture as I carried out, in anxious obedience, just what He had asked of me.

Oh, how God's Word has been music to me!

 WHAT TO DO

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 16-20

"...We do not know what to do, but we are looking to you for help." 2 Chronicles 20:12 NLT

Are you scratching your head?

Are you at a fork in the road and don't know which way to turn?

Is there a decision to be made that you aren't sure how to make?

Are you stumped?

Perplexed?

Puzzled?

Confused by too many choices--worse yet, too many good choices?

Turn to God!

Look to Him for help.

Seek His will.

Watch for Him to eliminate your options and highlight the path He desires you walk upon.

Jehoshaphat did, we can, too!

 DRIVE, DESTROY AND DEMOLISH

Today's reading: Numbers 33-36

"...When you cross the Jordan River into the land of Canaan, you must drive out all the people living there. You must destroy all their carved and molten images and demolish all their pagan shrines." Numbers 33:51-52 NLT

A promised land.

A constant presence on the journey.

A miraculous provision for the forty long years.

A hope of an established and numerous people.

And God asks this of them--drive out the current residents, destroy all the little gods lying around the land and demolish the ungodly places of worship.

He was asking them to put some sweat equity into setting themselves up for success.

An investment in their faith.

A participation fee, if you would like to think of it that way.

All because God wanted the best for His people and knew that only wholehearted worship of Him would accomplish that.

It wasn't too much to ask of them--and it isn't too much to ask of us.

 MOST HOLY PLACE

Today's reading: Hebrews 8-10

"And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven's Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus." Hebrews 10:19 NLT

Because of the blood.

Not just that it was spilled.

Not just as a random reference to the spilling.

But that it was spilled out and over onto your heart and sins.

Not claimed as forgiving and washing white as snow the sins of your Grandpa or Mom.

But yours.

Your depravity. Your ineptitude. Your choices to rebel. Your decisions to do your own thing.

Your sins.

Jesus's blood was spilled to wash away your sins and allow you entrance into the Most Holy Place.

A place only reserved for the cleaned up, washed up, forgiven.

A place of nearness to God's heart.

LOOK INTENTLY

Today's reading: Acts 3-4

"Peter and John looked at him intently..." Acts 3:4 NLT

Before they said a word...

Before they quoted Scripture...

Before they touched the man...

Before they offered words and healing that would change the fella's life...

They looked intently at him.

They noticed him.

They took the time to be reminded that this person standing before them was also a creation of the Most High God.

That single solitary time spent looking intently gave them pause.

Because they were reminded he stood where they very well could have stood.

They quickly recalled how much the glory of God in their own lives changed them.

They saw the soul within the useless body before they responded.

And respond they did!

They introduced this fella, this fella they paused long enough to really recognize, to the power of God!

May we all stop long enough to look intently into the eyes, heart and lives of another today.

 WELL, IS IT?

Today's reading: Jonah

"The Lord replied, Is it right for you to be angry about this?" Jonah 4:4 NLT

Ever had the Lord ask you the same things?

About something that's upset your apple cart.

Something that's not gone your well-planned way.

Something that leaves you bitter, angry, alone, uncomfortable.

I can see sullen, sulking, shoulders drooping Jonah standing on the hillside overlooking Ninevah. I can hear him sigh in disbelief. I can see on his face a disgruntled attitude.

All because it didn't turn out like he thought it would.

Like he thought it should.

Like he was God.

Ouch--I certainly got personal real fast, didn't I.

Is it right for us to be angry about the things we're carrying around in our hearts and in our heads? Do we see the whole picture? Can we see into the future in regards to the issue?

I don't think so. Let's trust God with it!

 AS BOLD AS LIONS

Today's reading: Proverbs 28

"The wicked run away when no one is chasing them, but the godly are as bold as lions." Proverbs 28:1 NLT

I don't usually consider myself to be bold.

Determined? Yes.

Hard headed? Yes, my husband shouts from the background.

Can talk to a post? Yes.

But bold?

Bold is a word I reserve for those much stronger than myself. Those who take the stands I seldom take. Those whose faith is much louder than my own. Those who walk right up to the throne of God and quote His promises back to Him--and expect an answer.

No, I'm not bold.

I'm more like the child who hides behind her momma's skirt tails. Or in my case, the hem of my Father's brilliant white, flowing robe.

The wicked run away, but the godly are bold.

Well, maybe there is a glimmer of boldness in me...I don't run away, I run to God. I stand behind Him and watch as He fights for me. I run to the safety and comfort and peace of His presence. I stand on His track record and His reliability. I know my limitations and His expanse.

Maybe that's a quiet boldness.

Hmm, maybe it is.

IN THE NAME OF THE LORD

Today's reading: 117-118

"Though hostile nations surrounded me, I destroyed them all in the name of the Lord. Yes, they surrounded and attacked me, but I destroyed them all in the name of the Lord. They swarmed around me like bees; they blazed against me like a roaring flame. But I destroyed them all in the name of the Lord." Psalm 118:10-12 NLT

This psalmist's words remind me, no--convict me, really, of how very little I have done in the name of the Lord.

I settle for what the world doles out to me.

I succumb to the temptations of the enemy that rob me of blessings.

I waver in my faith as life's storms billow against me.

I fail to choose to remember God's promises as I trudge over life's obstacles.

But this morning, well, this morning I am revitalized by the words in this psalm. I am reminded of how very powerful I am when I stand in the name of the Lord. I am once again brought to the realization of just what it means to be a child of the Most High God.

The Word of the Lord has revived me again.

Watch out world, I'm going out today in the name of the Lord!

 HOW CLOSE

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 11-15

...The Lord will stay with you as long as you stay with Him! Whenever you seek him, you will find him. But if you abandon him, he will abandon you." 2 Chronicles 15:2 NLT

How close do you want God to be in your life?

Really? How close?

With you every moment? There to help you with each and every decision? To walk beside you on good days? To carry you on the bad ones?

I think we all would answer that we want God beside us at all times--as close to us as possible!

Okay, so what are we doing to allow that?

Are we staying with Him?

Are we seeking Him?

Are we walking as closely to Him as we want Him to walk with us?

Just how close is enough for you?

 IN ADDITION TO

Today's reading: Numbers 29-32

"...in addition to the regular daily burnt offering and its accompanying drink offering."

If I have counted correctly, this same phrase is given to us thirteen times in this portion of reading. Thirteen times!

It's given in regards to special offerings for Passover, for the Festival or Trumpets, for the Day of Atonement and for the Festival of Shelters.

In addition to...

Which means 'over and above' in my book.

What are we doing that is 'over and above' for the Lord?

Church attendance is minimal.

Giving our tithes cheerfully is minimal.

Serving inside, and outside, our houses of worship is minimal.

Praying is minimal.

Time in the Word is minimal.

So, brothers and sisters, what are we doing in addition to our regular response to the Lord?

Where are we going above and beyond?

How are we going over and above?

It's individual. It's personal. It's needing to be Spirit led.

It's needing to be done.

Sunday, October 2, 2022

 LET'S GROW

Today's reading: Hebrews 5-7

"So let us stop going over the basics of Christianity again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding..." Hebrews 6:1 NLT

The writer of Hebrews spoke to the Christians about their dormant state in regards to godly growth.

He could be talking to us!

Isn't it time we dug deeper into the Word of God?

Lingered longer over His love letter to us?

Made His words our first and final reference?

Spent more time studying our Bibles from cover to cover--just to know more about God?

It's time for a growth spurt, Church.

 TIME IS IN HIS HANDS

Today's reading: Acts 1-2

"The Father sets those dates, he replied, and they are not for you to know." Acts 1:7 NLT

As the disciples sat, ate, listened and learned while in Jesus' presence, this single question kept popping up in their conversations.

When would He leave?

When would He overthrow the government?

When would He return?

When would He begin to look like the conquering Messiah they had pictured in their minds?

Every question revolved around, WHEN.

We do that, too.

When will we have answers to our prayers?

When will this temptation stop irritating our Christian walks?

When will we see the prodigal coming down the lane?

When will we see the church rise up again, lives be changed, souls be saved, the world recognize Him as their Savior?

I believe the answer is the same one He gave the disciples, The Father sets those dates, and they are not for you to know.

They are, however, still ours to pray about, hope for, believe in and rest upon while we go about His business!

 PROMISE KEEPER

Today's reading: Obadiah

"But Jerusalem will become a refuge for those who escape; it will be a holy place. And the people of Israel will come back to reclaim their inheritance." Obadiah verse 17 NLT

Never has their been a coming back home as large in number as after the diaspora (the casting out) of Israel.

Yes, Israel was dispersed.

Yes, for a while their country was taken away from them--never from God.

Yes, the Jewish people spent a long time scattered among nations while their homeland was fought over.

But God.

God is drawing them back in waves.

With all they have learned in their foreign countries.

With the riches they have attained while away.

With a deep sense of 'home' still pulsing through their veins, even after many generations of being away.

This 'aliyah', or coming home, is a fulfillment of God's prophecy in this tiny book of Obadiah.

If, and I repeat, IF, our God chooses to fulfill this promise, what in the world makes you think He won't fulfill His promises to you?

Our promise-keeping God takes every one of His promises made seriously.

The ones to entire nations. The ones to whole races. The ones to those saved by his Son's precious blood.

 REFLECTING POOLS
Today's reading: Proverbs 26-27

"As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the person." Proverbs 27:19 NLT

Are you a good billboard for Christianity?

Do your facial expressions, body language and wordless innuendos sell Christ to the world you are called to reach?

Is the joy of your heart the least bit contagious?

Do the truths you believe permeate your conversations?

Would someone want to follow you to church because of your excitement in regards to it?

Would folks want what you have based on how you display it?

Solomon mentions this in today's proverb...How's the reflecting pool of your heart?

 ALL THE GLORY

Today's reading: Psalm 114-116

"Not to us, O Lord, but to you goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness." Psalm 115:1 NLT

I'm honored to be part of a church that has this verse as our 'theme'.

We have great ministers. We have outstanding musicians. We are blessed beyond measure with teachers who love the Word of God and use their gifts in sharing their knowledge with others. We have volunteers that serve with their whole hearts.

But every one of us knows and believes that ALL the glory goes to God!

We could meet.

We could 'pull off' a Sunday that would tick off all the boxes.

We could fill slots needed in different areas of the church.

But because we choose to glorify God in it all, we do it to the best of our abilities--conveying all applause and kudos to Him.

Are you part of such a church? Are you being fed in a house of worship that puts God in the forefront? Are you, yourself, serving to His glory?

Those kinds of churches are out there--they can be made, if enough of God's children seek His glory.

 HE IS SO GOOD!

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 6-10

"When all the people of Israel saw the fire coming down and the glorious presence of the Lord filling the Temple, they fell face down on the ground and worshiped and praise the Lord saying, He is so good! His faithful love endures forever!" 2 Chronicles 7:3 NLT

At the sight of God's presence, those at the Temple dedication ceremony couldn't ask for a thing.

They couldn't remember their prayer request lists for the life of them.

They were dumbstruck, filled with awe, unable to say anything but, He is so good!

That's how is should be each and every time we are allowed into His presence.

Awe.

Reverence.

Overflowing with a desire to praise.

 TAKE IT TO THE LORD

Today's reading: Numbers 25-28

"So Moses brought their case before the Lord." Numbers 27:5 NLT

Moses had some tough decisions to make on behalf of the people of Israel.

Decisions that involved property, in this instance, but also decisions that involved life and death and even banishment from the family of God.

In each of these, Moses sought the Lord.

When his feelings were hurt, he sought out God's decision on the matters, instead of relying on his own.

When his plans were dashed, he sought God's leading, instead of believing he knew it all, or knew best.

When his position, God appointed position, was questioned, he sought out God for validation.

When he was mad, and did he ever have reason to be with two million people to wrangle, he sought God for direction.

He brought each and every 'case' before the Lord for His judgement and guidance.

That's quite an example for us to follow.

Every day.

With every choice we're called to make.

 LIVING POWER

Today's reading: Hebrews 1-4

"For the word of God is full of living power. It is sharper than the sharpest knife, cutting deep into our innermost thoughts and desires. It exposes us for what we really are." Hebrews 4:12 NLT

As you enter the door of your house of worship today, keep this verse in mind.

When your pastor speaks, listen intently.

When the Word of God is read, expect to see lives changed.

Our Bible is full of living power.

It's promises are power-packed.

It's accounts are life-changing.

It's dependability through the ages is second to none.

Listen to it. Allow it to change you. Let it show you another facet of God's character.

 SECRET DISCIPLES

Today's reading: John 19-21

"Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take Jesus' body down. When Pilate gave him permission, he came and took the body away." John 19:38 NLT

I believe there is God-sized purpose for the secret disciples around the world today.

The people who are not loud with their faith.

The people who do not wear the Christian t-shirts.

The people who don't quote Bible verses with every breath.

God has them in place, in their homes and workplaces and communities, for moments like the one Joseph found himself in.

In an ungodly palace, surrounded by godlessness we find a man who had made enough of an impact on Pilate, or had chosen to not ruffle his feathers in any way. One fella who could ask this great request and it be granted.

For such a time as this.

Maybe you are a secret disciple.

For now.

 PLUMB LINE

Today's reading: Amos 5-9

"...And the Lord replied, I will test my people with this plumb line. I will no longer ignore all their sins." Amos 7:8 NLT

Church family, I believe this verse is written specifically and with pointed finger to us.

We are 'my people' to the Lord.

We are the ones who know better.

We are the shining, salty examples He has chosen to reach the world.

So why shouldn't our lives and hearts line up to His plumb line?

If your straight and narrow has begun to bend and weave, seek God to make corrections.

If your line in the sand has become blurred, seek God to make the changes needed to permanently mark that line.

If your witness has become silent, seek God to burn within you so much that you cannot help but speak out about Him.

Stand beside the plumb line of God's righteousness and see where you need to 'straighten up;.

 THE CONCEALED THINGS
Today's reading: Proverbs 25

"It is God's privilege to conceal things, and the king's privilege to discover them." Proverbs 25:2 NLT

I don't know where some of us have gotten the idea that God needs to give us explanations to things we don't understand.

Why something has happened.

When something will change.

How what He has done should make sense.

Our God, who knows more than we ever will, sees farther than we will ever see, understands more than we will ever comprehend, loves more than our hearts could ever love, has control of more than we ever need put in control of, has concealed some things from us for a reason.

His reason.

His majestic, mighty, omniscient, all knowing reason.

It's His privilege as God--and ours to trust.

 THEY

Today's reading: Psalm 111-113

"They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them." Psalm 112:7 NLT

'They' set the tone for rallies and initiatives.

"They' determine the latest fashions and trends.

'They' are the ones our kids reference in regards to what we should allow them to do.

'They', we've come to find out in today's society are the nameless, the faceless, the anonymous.

But in the Word of God, 'they' are the ones who fear the Lord.

'They' know who He is and who they are not.

'They' understand rank and file, realizing He is above all.

'They' are His children.

Are you one of them?

Can people say of you, 'They do not worry or doubt--they trust in the Lord!'
