LIKE
Today's reading: 1 Samuel 7-9

"But the people refused to listen to Samuel's warning. Even so, we still want a king, they said. We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will govern us and lead us into battle." 1 Samuel 8:19-20 NLT

Like-the same or nearly the same.

Here's the problem: the children of Israel, God's chosen, God's elevated, God's elite, wanted less for themselves than God wanted for them. They admired the nations around them, the sinful, idol-worshiping heathen bordering their God-given land.

They wanted to be just like them.

To be comparable to them.

To match them.

To resemble them.

Are we guilty of the same thing?

Is the world catching our eye? Peaking our interests? Luring us away?

Are we wanting to be governed by others and led into the fight of our lives--just to be like the ungodly?
