CITIES OF REFUGE
Today's reading: Joshua 16-20
"These cities were set apart for Israelites as well as the foreigners living among them. Anyone who accidentally killed another person could take refuge in one of these cities. In this way, they could escape being killed in revenge prior to standing trial before the community." Joshua 20:9 NLT
Cities of refuge were established as the Israelites began to settle in the Promised Land.
Places where folks involved in questionable circumstances could find help, hope and safety. Secure spots where they could open up about their sides of the story. Locations where they might find love and support. Settings that were neither hostile to the offender or blind to right and wrong. Venues that allow for repentance and restoration, and when God-led, reconciliation.
These locales were not instituted to cover-up sins. They were not intended to sweep injustices under the rug and out of sight. They were not created to house criminals, but to harbor healing.
Isn't that what our churches are to be?
