 LIE AWAKE

Today's reading: Psalm 63-65

"I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. I think how much you have helped me; I sing for joy in the shadow of your protecting wings." Psalm 63:6-7 NLT

I must admit, this Bible-blogger/Sunday School teacher/lover-of-the-Bible/Bible literacy coach, seldom lies awake at night pondering the greatness of God.

Oh, let's make it very clear--I have plenty of reasons to!

It's just that when I do lie awake at night...

When I have one of those tossing and turning, sleep eludes me kind of nights...

When counting sheep doesn't work...

When I cannot close my eyes in slumber...

It's usually because I've brought the weights of the world to bed with me.

Maybe I've lugged my prayer request list with me between the sheets.

Possibly I've picked up the burden from a friends' pile and added it to my own and attempted to use them as pillows.

For whatever the reason, it's rarely, if ever, that I lie awake thinking about the goodness of God, but instead the greatness of my problems.

Shame on me!

SHAME ON ME!

Why don't I choose to think about all the blessings He has given me...

Why don't I recall all the times He has stepped in and worked His way in a seemingly impossible situation...

Why don't I ponder His track record throughout the pages of the Book I dearly love and promote...

Why don't I pause to think about the mere power held in the hands of the One who will bring the morning sun back to the horizon in just a few hours...

Why don't I make a mental note of the promises He has made to me...

Why don't I?
